Springsteen concert for Obama, Philadelphia, Oct. 4 -- I guess the most surprising thing about this was how "un-liberal" the crowd seemed.
Was not the blog-standard cool, hip, urban/alternative, urbane crowd I had seen at other Obama events.

Had spent the night before at Penn State, where I felt I could tell from the way students dressed, behaved, who was more Rep., who more Dem.
At the Philly event, all stereotypes were thrown over.

The constant surprise for me is the almost messianic appeal Obama seems to have. I saw Bruce Springsteen perform for Kerry in Florida in 2004. At the time it felt like a last, slightly disconnected attempt to be cool. Now, Obama seems more like the überrockstar himself. Doesn't really need aging rockers to drum up support for him. |
